There once was a cow with a hat

Then it went to sleep on a mat

He met a black dog

Asleep on a log

That was friends with a big fat rat!

Millipedes and Centipedes

Millipedes and centipedes are quite aggressive to other invertebrate in the Frankley School bush.  They are part of the Myriapods (invertebrates that have an long body with many segments).  

Appearance

Millipedes and centipedes look similar, but there are a few differences.  Both have a long body with many legs and 2 antennae on the head. Millipedes are generally harmless (they can give off substances,like venom). Centipedes have venom that they inject into predators to protect themselves.

Defences

Millipedes and centipedes have poison to keep other bugs away. Millipedes can't really hurt humans because they’re only strong enough to hurt other bugs but they will make a small blister.

Habitat

Millipedes and Centipedes like to live in rotten, dark, damp places inside trees and under rocks and long grass like in the frankley school bush.  They live in these conditions to keep moist and not dry up.

Did you know that Millipedes and Centipedes are the only arthropods that regrow their legs and antennae.
